How does a person "get gritty"?

I get asked this A LOT!

We started using #getgritty on our social media posts and swag when we downsized the studio and moved into a gritty, yet up and coming part of our city. We went from a slick midtown studio to an old warehouse that housed everything from cattle to taxidermy to electric pianos, over the last 50 years. It was a little gritty when we moved in, but with a bit of elbow grease, and a big vision we turned it into the best place to #GetGritty....In my opinion.🤷🏻‍♀️







So what does "get gritty" mean? It's another way of saying "pull yourself up by your bootstraps, girl!" It means you do whatever it takes to make things happen. It means gritting through the tough stuff to get to the good stuff. Over the years I've developed 4 key mindsets to developed our grittiness.

Let's get started!

  1. You have to have a vision. Visualize WHERE you want to be and WHO you want to be. It's gotta be BIG to have an impact and once you can see it, Write.It.Down! science proves that if you write it down you will have a 90% chance of succeeding. If you can see it in your head, it will become a reality, but first, you also need numbers 2, 3, & 4. Read On!

  2. Don't listen to the nay-sayers. We all have at least one person in our family or friends circle that will try to keep you at their level while you put in the work to become the person you want to be. As heartbreaking and frustrating as this will be, try to understand that as you do the work, you become a mirror for what they are not willing to do. So, whether it's conscious or not, there will almost always be someone in your circle that will try to sabotage your efforts to keep you at their level. Unfortunately, this is the time when certain friends might start falling away. However, if your VISION is big enough, you will not be butt-hurt by this falling away. Let them go with love and empathy. Perhaps, through your inspiring actions, they will choose to join you in the journey instead of losing you as a friend.

  3. Understand there is no, zero, zilch substitute for doing the work. Sorry friend, but there are no quick fixes, magic pills, or "easy button". You just have to grit your teeth through the hard stuff to get to the good stuff. This includes physically moving your body in challenging ways and actively working on changing your mindset to a more "can-do" and positive way of thinking. It means investing your money differently so your health and wellness and longevity are supported instead of spending on things that give you the quick fixes and instant gratifications. It means carving out time in an already busy schedule to create new habit, new self care regimens, new routines....so you can reach our vision! Do the work girl! You will respect yourself for it.

  4. And finally! Make a decision. You have to actively choose to get gritty. This shit doesn't come easy! But then again...nothing worthwhile does, right? But, I'll tell you right now, that if you can't consciously make the decision to do something, you will never have ownership in it. Without ownership, it will never be yours. Personal responsibility is the number one reason you are where you are today in your health and wellness. And personal responsibility will be the number reason you succeed (or not). **oh boy, I just felt someone out there cringe with that reality check.

This may sound harsh, but you need to hear this...It is no one's fault that you have a too busy schedule or multiple kids that take up all your time, or your relationships don't support you or you are broke or you are still sleeping in or watching 3 hours of tv every night instead of moving your body. You can CHOOSE to make changes to all of this. (ok, maybe don't get rid of the kids. Somewhere deep down, you love all of them equally😜)

Even if something out of your control happened to you, your choice to respond to it will determine if you will be a victim or a success.


This is such a big one that I thought about making it number 1, but I think it's important to have an understanding of what it take to Get Gritty before you can choose to Be Gritty.
